This course will provide a survey of the development of Christian thought from the 1st through 16th centuries and it will examine the many ways that it influenced society as well as how it was shaped by it.
The aim of this course is to give an overview of the history of Christian Thought which will provide you with resources that you may use for clarifying theological questions that arise now.
The course is designed to enable student to develop basic theological vocabulary, be instructed in the major doctrines commonly held within ecumenical Christianity, become knowledgeable of one of the principal interpreters of Christian faith, St. Augustine. It also aims to articulate one's own theological perspective with critical reviews of readings and discussions in class.
The course will examine how people of faith can practice and apply their deepest held convictions in the public square. What values can and should inform Christians in our democratic process? How do the convictions we express on Sunday influence our votes on Election Day? How would you define a "values voter?" We begin with a special Saturday workshop to be held at Winnetka Congregational Church and then continue the discussion through audio lectures and online discussion.
This class is designed to help the student identify theological issues in the public square, analyze them thoroughly and write, speak and blog about theological concepts in an intelligible, dynamic and interesting fashion for the general public.
The course is a seminar examining the themes of servant hood/surrogacy, the Black Christ/historical Jesus, Christ/Christa, atonement/abuse in womanist and feminist theologies in the context of the churches of the Center for Community Transformation.
